September 13, 2018 – I’m happy to report that I LOVE my new hip. I had follow-up xrays which shoed everything looking good, and my non-op hip in perfect shape, as well.
Last year I decided to try racing (I’ve been rowing for 9 years, but not racing, and the pain was unbearable by the end). I’m happy to report that at the end of this month I am going to FISA Worlds in Florida to race SIX times in three days. Kind of crazy.
I still have trouble with my glute medius, which has … Read the rest
Today is my 8 year anniversary of my BHR by Dr. De Smet of Belgium. It is still doing well and I never had any problems with my hip resurfacing. I was very lucky to have a quick and easy recovery. I was on one crutch for 3 weeks and sight seeing in Belgium 5 days post op. Same as the other 8 patients I was with. We had a great time in Belgium with each other crutching around the Holiday Inn and Ghent.
I am now 69, so I hope my BHR will stay with me a long, long … Read the rest
Pablo’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. De Smet 2013
February 04, 2013
I’m a 46 year old male, and will need a hip resurfacing this year. The arthritis in my case is apparently due to the combination of three factors: developmental dysplasia (mild I guess), femoroacetabular impingment (FAI) and joint hypermobility.
This process was accelerated (inadvertently) by practicing sports all my life (swimming, then basketball, mountaineering / climbing, running, cycling, and lately back to swimming -the most forgiving of them all-), until I found out about the arthritis 5 years ago. I’ve had a hard time accepting this…
Fortunately, as I’m … Read the rest
Roemer Visser’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. De Smet 2013
Friday, Oct 11, 2013
It’s strange, but I have a new hip. That is to say, just three days ago, Dr. Koen de Smet resurfaced my left hip using the Birmingham method. I’ve just entered the last two hours of my hospital stay in the Jan Palfijn hospital in Gent.
Some background information about me: I am a 44-year old male, living in the Netherlands, and I was diagnosed with congenital hip dysplasia in December 2010. The diagnosis occurred after an apparent groin injury just kept persisting for nearly two years. … Read the rest
Jira’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. De Smet 2010
I received a Right Conserve+ 17 days ago from Dr. De Smet of Belgium. We got home to Canada 6 days ago and today I had my first exercise session in our local pool. The therapists were blown away by how mobile I was. They have very little experience with resurfacing, and see people with THR, 6 weeks post-op, who have lots of rehab to go. I would highly recommend Dr. De Smet for his surgical skill and his progressive rehab program. He has a great staff as well. … Read the rest

Izumi’s Hip Resurfacing with Dr. De Smet 2004
January 6, 2013
I had my LBHR done by Dr. DeSmet over 9 years ago. Since I have had no problems since then, I haven’t been on this sight. About 2 months ago I suddenly started having pain as well as a lot of grinding and clunking. This sight was very informative and helpful to me back then so I find myself here again in search of answers.
My recent X-rays show no problems. Cobalt/Chromium blood tests came back really high. However here is the confusing part. The joint suddenly feels a … Read the rest
