I had my left hip hip done in 2005 by Dr. Myron Stachniw in Galesburg, Il., and the left hip the following year. Aside from the occasional flare up of bursitis in my left hip, I have remained very active. My left hip is a resurf. The right hip is a large femoral ball hip replacement.
I have been baffled at all the bad press resurfs have had the past few years. My old surgeon had one person that required a revision, and that was it. And that’s been the past 12 years.… Read the rest
2 Year Update December 21, 2017
A much overdue report on my experience with Dr. de Smet and my new right Conserve + hip. I don’t wish to repeat all of the good information already available on this site, but let me say that it has been an invaluable resource and I have referred many locals to it after they have seen my progress in the gym and at at my workplace. I have been going to the same gym for over 20 years and when I showed up post op they thought I’d sprained an ankle or something and … Read the rest
I am a 47 yr old extremely active male and former D1 college hockey player. For the last 3-4 years I have been suffering for hip flexor and groin pain. I just thought is was muscle/tendinitis pain from my deadliest, squats, running and skating. I visited a Orthopedic specialist about year ago for what i thought was a sports hernia. I was informed I had OA in both hips. My two femoral heads are large and flat on one side vs bing round. Space narrowing, a few spurs, some bone on bone, etc… Right is worse than the left. It … Read the rest
November 11, 2017 – It is the eighteenth anniversary of my right side BHR being implanted. It has been well used, is still playing tennis several times a week and has improved my quality of life beyond measure.
The left side one was four years last month – also doing fine.
I post this because I guess it is one of the oldest that are mentioned here and I hope it will encourage people that their hip resurfacing really can last. I remember hoping to get fifteen years or so out of it. Now hoping it … Read the rest
December 4, 2017 – Fifth year still had some nice improvement (believe it or not).
This also marks my fifth season back playing soccer. Every season I’ve had little nags here and there (Achilles, hamstrings, calfs, etc) but the hip has been injury free. When my conditioning wanes a bit in off season I can get that “achy” feeling after an hour or so playing. But if I use the foam roller a couple of times a week it really helps with that.
My local physio got me using a kettlebell but for only one of … Read the rest

I have about a week before my surgery next week. I’m a 49 year old female, born with hip dysplasia. I’m an avid rower and a cyclist and I’ve had bone-on-bone arthritis for at least two years. I was able to ride and row all season, and even got in one of each over the holiday weekend, which I’m happy about.
If it weren’t for this site I’d be having a hip replacement, I’m sure. I’m most looking forward to being able to stand, walk, and sleep without pain. Oddly enough I can row hard and ride … Read the rest
