Shelby’s Frist BHR January 2012 Six days post op with the first of two BHR’s and I’m sad to report I’m not going to join the ranks of those who trekked in Nepal during their first week with the new hardware. Today my goals are more modest – three sets of low level PT exercises, a few laps around the homestead with my crutches, figuring out how to put my socks on, knocking out my taxes… Ok, joking about the last part and I’ll actually be pleased if I can do the rest. Anyway, here’s a couple highlights and lessons … Read the rest
First Hip Resurfacing – RBHR May 5, 2010 Dr. Brooks
Here is my story about my hip resurfacing. It starts in October of 2006 when I went to a local doctor in southwest Michigan and had my right hip X-rayed. I wanted to make sure it was arthritis and not something else. He said it was indeed arthritis in my hip and I would have to have it replaced in three to five years. I laughed and said fat chance. After my visit I started taking glucosamine/chondroitin regularly and ibuprofen if I had pain. I am quite active and started … Read the rest
I had a RBHR by Dr. Brooks on February 25, 2009 at Euclid Hospital-Cleveland Clinic. It has been about 8 months since my surgery and I divided my experience into categories of chronological order. Before sharing my experience, I would like you to know that I am completely satisfied with the procedure and would recommend Dr. Brooks for anyone considering a hip resurfacing.
Background I was diagnosed with arthritis in my right hip about 5 years before having surgery. At that time I was 46 years old, and was told that I need a hip replacement. I tried to maintain … Read the rest
I’m about 6 weeks post-op and 41 years of age. I also have a stationery bike in the basement, hooked up to the computrainer. They say to ride without resistance for 6 weeks, but honestly, that is pretty lame. What resistance level did you use and did you work up a pretty good sweat? I need to really work some of the fat I’ve gained in the last six weeks!
My Doc (Peter Brooks) takes a very conservative approach and with good reason. By week four, I was still experiencing swelling. By week six, I chose to walk with one … Read the rest
August 19, 2010 I am 3 weeks post op and doing great. (RBHP Dr.Brooks) Pain is very minimal. Last night I slept for the first time w/o any pain meds which I was taking mainly to battle my distaste for sleeping on my back all night. I can even lie on the surgical side now but would still rather not. Walking nicely w/ one or two crutches. My only real concern is about the one exercise I flat out cannot perform, that being the one that requires I draw my knee up all the way into my chest. I should … Read the rest
May 24, 2010 I had a RBH by Dr. Peter Brooks at the Cleveland Clinic on 04/12 and am on 75% weight bearing for 7 weeks. It is annoying – but – I’ll do anything to make this heal properly. As for the 90 Degree angle – I don’t have tht restriction or any other restrictions usually associated with hip replacement – thank goodness. I too feel like I probably could walk without the weight bearing restriction – but – figure that will come soon enough! I had PT in the hospital – they showed me the excersises I need … Read the rest
August 4, 2008 I am on day 11. I had the BHR done by Dr Brooks at the Cleveland Clinic. Today is the first day I feel somewhat human. My pain has been in the front of the thigh with a lot of cramping type pain in the leg. I am only allowed to put 75% of my weight on the leg for 6 weeks after the surgery. I was surprised to hear you say that you were still on crutches.
I did not do well with the oxycondon and viocodin and have stop using them although I am having … Read the rest
November 15, 2012 5+ years Post Op
Just wanted to get a quick note out about my 5 year visit with Peter Brooks at the Cleveland Clinic for my Right BHR. I saw Dr. Brooks a week after playing in the Grand Masters and Super Grand Masters Divisions of the Lake Placid Lacrosse Tournament in August. I played 9 games over four days for the third time in the past three years.
In January, I will head to Florida for the Florida Lacrosse Classic again for the third time. I play lacrosse one or two times a week year round. … Read the rest
Dr. Brooks performed my LBHR last October 2010 and I am very pleased with the results. I never experienced any pain post surgery: In the hospital, the nurses would ask periodically throughout the day what my pain level was, on a scale of 1 to 10, and I don’t recall ever getting above a 2. I stopped taking percocet (or whatever the prescription pain reliever was) after less than a day, and used only Tylenol thereafter.
Likewise at home used Tylenol, although I did have some aching in my thighs at night for a while (I’m not sure what that
